Christmas shopping for a significant other...

Postby Drew Corleone on Sun Dec 09, 2007 12:58 pm

Input appreciated...

I've ruled out Tivo as a viable option, so that leaves me with two current choices: (a) A Guess watch. She keeps a picture of it on her fridge. (b) Her favorite perfume, which ran out a few months ago.

Option #1 will set me back $350. Option #2 will only set me back $110.

So... two questions:

(1) Is expensive perfume a bad Christmas gift?

(2) Would I be absolutely nuts to drop $350 on a girl I've been dating for seven months?

Alternative suggestions also welcome.

I'd say go for the watch. It's Christmas. Do the perfume for a birthday.

Well, I bought a diamond engagement ring for a girl I had dated for less than 7 months, so...

Yeah, the perfume will make a good Valentiine's present...

But 350 is a lot to drop in the first few months of a relationship.

I think either gift would be well received, but I agree that the watch might make a better Christmas present, and the perfume a better B-day or V-day present.

In regards to the money question, I think it depends on your assessment of the future of the relationship. By spending that much on a gift, unless you are made of money, you are telling her - and more importantly, yourself - that you are in this for the longhaul. A sentiment of this nature is a gesture towards the relationship itself as much as it is to her.

$350 is setting the bar really high for the first gift you give her.

Okay, follow-up...

Good or bad idea: Buying a similar, but different watch, that isn't going to cost a week's pay?

Play it safe and go with the perfume my friend....she will be impressed, I promise.

Or go big and get her the watch but beware of the follow up gift next time. Meaning, what are you going to do to top that?? At least this way you leave yourself an out of getting something bigger and better in case it turns out to be more serious.

'Course, I knew the Turk for 4 months before we got married so don't listen to me. Celebrating 13 years next February, so what the hell do I know??

I say go big. You found someone to date your sorry ass remind her why she's doing it. I am in hock because I have to remind my wife why she married my ugly ass.

Bad idea.

Have you tried looking for this watch in other places like Overstock?

Cheaper alternatives are always a bad idea. Cheaper sources (like HM's reference) are the better route.

My wife loves perfume as a gift and has come to expect that at Christmas and birthdays. If she's into that and you're not quite ready to part with $300+, go the perfume route with something else to go with it like a gift card to her favorite place to shop or something.

You can probably pick up the watch at a major discount after Christmas and hold it for Valentines or some other special occassion "just because."

A $300 watch "just because" is a terrible idea. The next "just because" gift would have to be an airport or something.

Depends on how far along the relationship is. Only Drew can know that. I've been married for over 15 years now, so "just because" gifts have worked out okay for me and haven't escalated into having to buy her a private island or anything. Sometimes it's a small gift, sometimes flowers, sometimes just a note, and sometimes a $300+ item. Plus, note I said wait until after Christmas and buy it on sale (all those things tend to go on sale), so in theory it won't be a $300 gift by that time. Just my 2 cents...

I will say that $350 for a Guess watch seems excessive--I thought their watches were like Fossils, in the $50-$75 range.

She did, too... I looked it up on the website. I guess the ladies watches go for more than the mens.

How is a Christmas gift a "just because" gift?

It's not. If you get it for her at Christmas, it's a Christmas giuft. I'm just saying if you don't want to part with that much money now, go with the perfume and keep your eyes on the watch for some other occassion (Valentines or whatever). You'll also likely find the watch cheaper after Christmas. That's all I'm saying. If you buy it now and give it to her for Christmas, then obviously don't tell her "here you go just because." Tell her "Merry Christmas."
