Seriously, think about it. I really dig REM, but let's look at their last five albums:

Accelerate: Very spotty.
Around the Sun: Horrible.
Reveal: Meh. "All the Way to Reno" is the only song that I still listen to .
Up: There's quite a bit of stuff on here that I like, but it's not up to the standard of their previous stuff.
New Adventures In Hi-Fi - This is the last album that, IMO, didn't have a bunch of dead weight.

Edit: Also, "retire" probably isn't the word I'm looking for. I just mean "Stop making new albums and tour on the old stuff.'

Yeah, I haven't listened to an REM album since Monster.

U2, on the other hand...

This new single is craptastic, no doubt. But U2 sometimes does a pretty poor job of choosing singles, so I'll hold off until I hear the rest. Plus, Bono's always said they'd retire if they ever make two crap albums in a row. So far, they haven't done that. This new one could be 1 in a row though.

That's pretty funny, because I'm listening to the 101X morning show right now online, and they just played a song that was complete and utter garbage, and I swear Jason Dick just said that it was a new U2 song when it was done....but I thought surely it couldn't have been....it was beyond bad...but apparently it was!!!!!

Hang it up fellas!!!!

I'm putting the Old 97s on the watch list for this. I've given their latest album a couple of listens and there's only 1 or 2 songs that I can get into. The rest of it is flat out bad.

The list starts and ends with U2. Just play Joshua Tree at Billy Bob's and go on down the road!

I saw this thread had been revived and the first band that came to mind was Weezer. That new album is terrible.

The first comment at the bottom of the above story made me laugh.

Top bands that need to call it a day and retire

On first listen I like five songs on it.

I need to go back and give it another spin or two. There's just something about the way Rhett sings on this album that sounds really affected and drives me nuts.
