2013-14 Texas Basketball thread: Historic Ineptitude Edition

Postby AtlLonghorn on Fri Nov 08, 2013 9:40 am

Boy this team is going to suck. Things get going tonight at 7pm against Mercer. I never thought tiny little Mercer University in Macon, Ga would provide a good measuring stick for the talent level at Texas, but they have 4 starters and 11 letter winners back from a team that won 24 games last year and lost the A-Sun title game to Dunk City, Florida. Very good chance we'll know how not good this Texas team is tonight.

As for the schedule, it's a typical Texas nonconference schedule with good teams like BYU and Temple on there as well as very good teams like Wichita State (maybe), UNC and Michigan State. Drew asked me on Twitter if we win 8 games. I think we do, but getting to 10 might be dicey.

Yeah. I'm not sure this thing can win 10 games.

Not to turn this into an "F the LHN" deal, but since most of the early games are on it, I have not been able to really get into following the basketball team anymore. But based on what I DID see last year and what is expected this year, I can assume I won't be missing a whole lot.

I would totally go... if watching Texas basketball weren't about the least appealing way I could think of to spend a Friday night.

Mezzanine seats can be had for $2. Center court lower level seats can be had for $20 if you are feeling like a baller ass mofo.

Heavens, no! We can't fire Rick Barnes! We won't be able to get anything resembling a good coach and the next thing you know we're finding ourselves going into halftime at home down by double digits against South Alabama in front of a crowd of 45 people.

Javan Felix. That's the only one I know.

He had a good game in the loss at Baylor last year, which was one of two games I saw.

Through 3 games, against Mercer, South Alabama, and SFA, this tells us all we need to know (even if we are 3-0)

I know that this is the UT basketball equivalent of "The Texas Rangers need more pitching!" but why is this team so bad from the line?

I hope they are able to get Holmes' tooth back together.

Yeah. So far, so good. The Michigan State/North Carolina back to back will be rough, but I'm interested to see what happens after that when conference play gets rolling.

Yeah....I'll admit it, I kind of like this team so far. I mean, don't get me wrong, they're not incredibly talented, but at least they play hard and actually give a shit....can't say the same for some of the slapdicks that left.

As for the free throw situation....it's incredible. I'm too lazy to look, but I wonder the last time we had a team shoot above 70% from the line?

Yeah, definitely a pleasant surprise so far. There have been some really good flashes at times from Holmes and Ridley who has been really good down the stretch of a couple of games. Isaiah Taylor has some real promise it looks like and has been solid so far. If this team can limit the turnovers, which has been a problem so far, they can have an OK season. Not one that should allow Barnes to keep his job, but we were thinking less than 10 wins at one point and looking at the schedule I think 10-3 entering conference play is doable (Temple isn't very good right now so that's winnable and we should beat Tx St and Rice and lose to UNC and Sparty).

Realistically I think beating Kansas, Oklahoma State, Baylor and Iowa State is a tall task for this team so I'd say that's 8 conference losses right there. I think we can split with OU and every other game is winnable (Tech, KState, WVU aren't good, TCU is atrocious). If I'm being the most optimistic I can be I'd say we could steal a home game against Baylor or ISU and lose the rest against the top tier Big 12 teams. So I'm saying absolutely best case scenario is 10-8 in conference, worst case scenario should still be 6 wins (sweep TCU, beat Tech, OU, Kansas State, WVU at home and we won 7 last year so...)

Best case scenario we're 20-11 and somehow find a way to get into the tournament. Worst case scenario we lose that Temple game and win six conference games and finish 15-16. So I guess what I'm saying is, if we win between 15-20 games this year it will be a hell of an achievement given what we expected coming in.
