Really liked American Sniper. Bradley Cooper was great.

The book was a great read.

That's a 2014 movie.

Come on, Kevin... surely after 13 years you have realized that Peabody has no concept of movie release dates. I think he does this every year.

Yes I know it is 2014, but saw American Sniper last night also. Did not like most of it. Not because of Iraq, or snipers, or war, or Chris Kyle. Just thought the movie was a hot mess. It seemed to tell the story of an American hero and ptsd, but other then a few clips of a nagging wife at home and choking out a dog it did not really conquer that subject. It would have been better done as 1.5 hours of seeing his trouble off duty and after his 4th tour and using flashbacks to key moments (the butcher, killing a kid, etc). The bullet animation to kill the other sniper was straight out of the matrix and completely out of place in this movie. In fact, the whole sniper vs sniper storyline seemed out of place (even though it is true, it felt like they had Don King promoting the showdown). And as far as I understand it, Kyle was killed during script development. To only deal with it with a 10 second title card at the end of the movie was a disservice.

2/10

Feel free to disagree, but please take note that in no way is this a slight against Kyle and what he did in Iraq.

I love the original. There's no way this doesn't totally suck, but I will probably see it anyway.

There is an Entourage movie? Is it 2005 again or something?

That's disappointing but it seems to be the consensus.

It was not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination. I just wouldn't recommend paying $10 to see it

What he said.....wow, that was intense, and might be the best movie of the year....definitely the best I've seen. Do yourself a favor and see it at the theater too...way better experience, but won't be around much longer I imagine. I saw it at the iPic, so I think it'll be around for another week there.

On a related note, if Del Toro doesn't win best supporting actor, it'll be a travesty.

Seriously. I don't do this on purpose. I'm going off when they are released where I live. If they are released earlier in some part of the world I apologize. Crazy.

I'm going to attempt to do 2016 correctly.

The new Point Break was better than the original movie. Awesome extreme sports scenes.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2 was better than Mockingjay Part 1.

I enjoyed the heck out of Krampus.

I saw The Big Short and Star Wars Ep.7

Solid 6 or so rating for both.

Recent moviegoing roundup:

The Big Short - 7. I was entertained.

The Hateful Eight - 4. Tarantino at his most self-indulgent. 2 hours and 50 minutes of pretentious crap. Way longer than it has any right to be. The more I think about it the less I like it.

The Martian - 6. Didn't capture whatever it was that made the book special.

Spotlight - 8. Concentrated more on the journalism side of things and managed not to be boring.

The Revenant - 5. It's never a good sign when you check your watch a half hour into a 2.5 hour movie. I never really gave a shit about anything going on and who lived or died. Not sure what Leo did here to get the Oscar nomination. Hardy did good work though.

I really enjoyed the big short. Pretty amazing story really. Speaker at our luncheon last week wrote The Greatest Trade Ever which is also about guys shorting the mortgage crisis. Very interesting.

I want to see Anomalisa but when I looked it was only playing in South Austin.

Actually quite excited about that movie.

Finally got around to "Everest".....wish I hadn't. Meh. It seemed so rushed and just had a hard time getting into any of the characters.

Agreed, we watched it yesterday. I read Into Thin Air a long time ago, but the book helped you understand the key bad decisions much more than the movie.
I don't remember what exactly happened with the oxygen bottles at the South Summit, but the movie confused me. I don't remember if they never got stowed there or if a different group (the South Africans?) took them.
I thought the movie made Beck Weathers look like an a-hole. I don't remember him being portrayed that way in the book.
I did read that Krakauer did not like the movie. He sold the movie rights soon after he wrote the book and didn't believe it would ever get made. Sounded like he didn't have much input in the screen play/movie.
